sangano-pinerolo bike ride

Had a nice bike ride to Pinerolo, 20 km + return, large sections of cycle lane. I started off this morning at a leasurly pace, enjoying the early March sun warming up the air. I had a very thin-crust pizza in town, then made it back home, with a refreshing stop at Gelandro, the best ice-cream shop in the whole area. The ride was thoroughly enjoyable, had it not been for my rather sore bum I could have gone on another few hours.

I guess it's all a matter of saddle-training when you travel… admittedly the road was mainly flat, with no big hills to tackle, quite alright for my one-speed city bike. Anyway, I enjoyed my going so much that I want to do more of the same the coming weekends!

I saw a pretty large bicycle shop in Frossasco - I might go there to look for a decent TRAVEL bike sooner or later, when I finally get my head round to some serious bicycle travelling... something that always attracted me, but I never really got round to do.

no bike racks

In p. Castello there are NO bike racks. This town (Turin, Italy) is really appalling - it's very hard to find ANY bike racks near ANY public places, theatres, public buildings, museums, squares, restaurants, you do find SOME near schools and universities, but it's just a fraction of what's needed or what would stimulate the use of the bicycle - really sad for a town that 'prides' itself with being 'cycle friendly'. I'm afraid a cycle-hire scheme, although welcomed, is just NOT enough…

Bike Pride 2012, 3 giugno, TORINO - La parata di biciclette per una città a misura d'uomo

Domenica 3 giugno a Torino, giornata mondiale dell’ambiente e conclusione del festival Smart Cities, torna la parata di biciclette e di mezzi ecologici del Bike Pride. Si parte alle 15:00 dal parco del Valentino e ci si inoltra per la prima volta a Torino Nord, per tornare a festeggiare in Piazza Castello. Sarà una giornata importante e piena di eventi!

Sovvertendo ogni pronostico, Torino ha dimostrato di essere anche la città delle due ruote. Nelle due edizioni precedenti, più di 10.000 cittadini hanno inondato la città di biciclette e altri mezzi ecologici. La grandissima partecipazione ha sancito un momento di non ritorno per la città: mobilità sostenibile, sicurezza stradale, ridistribuzione degli spazi a favore della ciclo-pedonalità, qualità della vita, sono istanze che non possono più essere ignorate o sottovalutate. Istanze che negli ultimi mesi sono state riprese a livello nazionale e ribadite dalla campagna #salvaiciclisti (cui la Città ha formalmente aderito), nata per evidenziare e porre rimedio al triste primato di decessi sulle due ruote: 2600 morti e 40.000 feriti in soli 10 anni, solo in Italia. IL BIKE PRIDE continuerà la campagna nazionale che il 28 aprile ha portato a Roma 50.000 persone!

La bicicletta in città, come ci insegna gran parte d'Europa, è sinonimo di civilità, di sostenibilità, di sicurezza stradale e di vivibilità e vogliamo ribadirlo con una parata d'orgoglio a due ruote.

Dimostriamo all'amministrazione che vogliamo cambiamenti concreti, inondiamo la città di Biciclette e festeggiamo civilmente e pacificamente su migliaia di biciclette scampanellanti! 
E' una sfida difficile il cui senso e la cui credibilità dipenderà dalla partecipazione di tutti!

and this morning, 7:49am, same lane...

this is actually parked here most mornings. in the netherlands they would already have set it on fire, I believe...

sadly this shows exactly how much respect and consideration is given to cyclists in italy... :(

cycle lane Beinasco-Sangano (TO)

I cycled all the way home from Beinasco tonight - some 14 km, after the usual 4.5 - a great sensation. I cycled the Sangone cycle lane that goes from Beinasco to Sangano. I did that last bit in just over an hour stopping for a short food-n-water break.
